Do people sentenced to jail get paid?

Because my economics teacher told me the other day that people that are sentenced to jail get a paycheck of $8 or something a week. (out of curiosity and for my homework..)
and i'm not sure if this is in the right category

last I heard you get $5 a week. If it's $8 then they must have gotten a cost of living raise. Funny. Nobody on the outside gets one. But seriously. I have heard $5. And yes. As far as I know they do get paid. How, when and why is another story.

If they work they are paid a small amount. I don't know about a stipend. I don't think they do!

Other wise its considered prison slave labor...the amount not showed on their checks go to contribute to the cost of their own incarceration.

It may be that they get "paid" for working at a job like in the kitchen, library etc. But they probably get it in the form of credits to the "store" to buy extras like candy, cigarettes (if it isn't illegal) etc.
