I m a student studying psychology in F7 and the above is what i learn from my study. I m planning to enter CU psychology by jupas too so i have made some relevent research about the prospect for being a psychologist in HK.
Actually, especially in HK, being a psychologist can be very hard as you MUST get a master degree to be a clinical psychologist. For university graduates in HK, there are only 2 types of psychologist they can be, education and Clinical Psycologist. Being the Clinical Psycologist one is rather difficult as it basically need to be at least a master degree before you go for a job.
moreover, as you can see the aspects they work in, mostly are owned by the government. Take an example, working in prison or mental hospital, all you need to face are people with serious mental or behavioral problem. You should first have an insight that working in such place or facing such people may not be good and it might be harsh too. I am not sure about the pay.. but i bet it wont be high as they are mainly run by the government.
However, being a private psychologist is completely the other way round. Indeed, more and more HKer are now suffering from stress and mental exhaustion. The importance of psychological health has been emphasised more than before, especially the well known disorders and disturbances like mood disorder (depression or manic) and insomnia. The future prospect can be so bright AS IF you can run a private clinic(or being hired-.-).
The pay or salary is definitely high since people who seek help to private clincal psychologist are usually middle-class and have the ability to pay for treatments.
In my opinion, if you are so deeply interested in psychology, you should ask yourself if you are REALLY ready to be a clincal psychologist. If not, i suggested you should buy some reference books and understand more about the nature and the notion of psychology first, especially the psychotherapy. Taking a postgrad dip or degree in open U or even CU or HKU is worthy because it makes no regret to study what you like, right?
In addition.. haha, for me, i like to study psychology but i m not really sure if i will become a psychologist. Well... life is full of changes and i think it is not necessary the job has to be the same with the degree you have taken=]
i hope my manifest opinions may help you^^
