造衫, having custom-made clothes, or, in proper term, bespoke clothing, can be an addictive hobby. It all depends on your budget. Local tailors of not-so-good to average quality charge $2000 to $4000-$5000 for suit; a few better tailors charge over $10,000. If you get custom suits from Italian/English brands such as Dunhill, Zegna, or Brioni, they are all over $20,000 for a 2-piece suit. For tailors in London, most famously on Savile Row, the average prices are a little over £2,000, in Rome or Naples, around €2,500, and master tailors in Paris charge around €3,000. If you need just 外套, the price maybe around 25% to 30% less. It all depends on what kind of fabric you choose, and most importantly, what kind of quality you want.
Some fabrics are very expensive, such as those from Loro Piana and Zegna, and other better ones such as Holland & Sherry, Lesser and Moxon (not very well known in Hong Kong but these are the best weavers). If you stay clear of these fabrics, your prices would be lower.
The craftmanship of tailors in Hong Kong are not too bad, though, obviously, not as good as tailors in London or Naples, hence suits are much cheaper here. If you see a tailor here charging $2000 for a suit, you know that they are not using very good fabrics, and craftmanship is almost non-existent - or worse, the suit is made in factories in China.
I have information to one or two better ones in Hong Kong - no, not the two places recommended above and I suspect those two are just advertising for the places they work at - you can email me if you want some recommendations. First make a visit to Brioni at Lane Crawford, Kiton at Swank Shop, Dunhill in Central, or the Zegna store and see for yourself what good tailoring is. You don't have to buy from them, but just ask about them and learn some important details about tailoring. Then visit a local tailor and look at his work, feel his jackets, examine the details.
Of course, if budget is not a problem, then off to Savile Row, Rome, Milan, Naples, or Paris! Even New York has got some pretty impressive tailors!
造衫, or bespoke clothing, is an art, a craft, a refined hobby. It is not fashion. Take time to study it and enjoy it. A well-made suit makes you look refined and elegant, while a badly-made suit makes you look like everyone else in Hong Kong. Once you have found a good tailor and start having custom-made clothes, you will never shop ready-made clothes again!
