The Gabilan Range or Gabilan Mountains are located on the Pacific Coast Range of California's Central Coast trending in a northwest-southeast direction along the Monterey County and San Benito County line. It is bordered by the Diablo Range, the San Andreas Fault, and California State Route 25 to the east and by the Santa Lucia Range, Salinas Valley, and U.S. Route 101 to the west. The Gabilan mountains are mentioned in the famous novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and in East of Eden also by John Steinbeck.

The American River... runs from the Sierra Nevada mountains through Sacramento and flows into the Sacramento River on its way to San Francisco Bay.
The American River is divided into the North, Middle, and South Forks. The North fork flows under the Foresthill Bridge just prior to the confluence with the Middle Fork about 3 miles (5 km) from Auburn, California. From there, the combined river meanders down past the proposed site of the controversial Auburn Dam, and onward to Folsom Lake... Below Folsom Lake, the river passes through an urbanized area but is buffered by a riparian park, the American River Parkway, that runs 23 miles (37 km) from Folsom Lake to the river's confluence with the Sacramento River.
