what is "Standard violin" you are talking about? do you mean full size (4/4)???
if you are a new learner and are determined to learn this instrument for a long time (let's say until grade 8), I strongly advise you to buy a better violin because you'll enjoy yourself much more since it should give a better sound.
When choosing a violin, it's important to look at the "wood pattern" on the surface because it greatly matters on the sound produced. Also the weight of the violin, the structure, finger board, bridge etc.... It's quite difficult to explain here. try to play it (with long bowing) and listen to the sound. If it can give very broad and clear sound, then this is better. It is advisable to ask your teacher to choose it for you if u r a rooky.
I strongly suggest you NOT TO BUY from TomLee coz their violins aren't very good and cost a lot. Try to look for some "private" violin makers...they sell better violin at a cheap price.
I would have thought a price of 2000-3000 HKD is accpetable for a new learner. (not from TomLee tho!)
