【星光夜視鏡】

以光學鏡頭,將由物體反射出來的微弱光線,或肉眼看不到的紅外線,聚焦成像在光電管的前表方,能量轉換為電子之後,在光電管放大數千倍到數萬倍,再由光電管尾端的螢光屏,轉換成肉眼可見的明亮影像。

星光夜視鏡與一般望遠鏡不同,注重的是能看見極低亮度下的目標,以及寬闊的視野,因此選用鏡頭的規格大都屬於短焦距、大光圈,倍率通常都在 6倍以下,適用於夜間駕駛的頭戴式機型,為了判斷距離,多半沒有放大倍率(1X)。

星光夜視鏡無法顯示彩色影像,為了配合人類肉眼的感光能力,螢光屏上的影像都是綠色的單色

【紅外線夜視鏡】

與星光夜視鏡不同的是, 星光夜視鏡是將微弱的光源放大,但是在完全沒有光源的狀況下(例如暗房中, 或是封閉的室內)星光夜視鏡幾乎派不上用場(因為 0 放大數十倍後還是 0 啊),但是紅外線夜視鏡並不需要光源, 因為發熱體就是一個最佳的光源了,因此紅外線夜視鏡可適用於室內的環境。

不過紅外線夜視鏡, 主要是將紅外線給顯像出來,因此, 在紅外線夜視鏡下並不能有清晰的影像(相較於星光夜視鏡)

雖然是分成這兩大類,但是最新的夜視鏡..其實也有結合星光夜視鏡及紅外線夜視鏡的設計,如此一來, 彼此截長不短, 讓夜視的功能更加的強大
