Average rent for an apartment in Manhattan is $2,000. My brother lives there and pays $3,000 a month rent for a small, one-bedroom apartment. Average cost to buy an apartment is $1 million. If you are going to live there I would suggest going to college there so you at least have dormitory housing. If not, then you may want to consider living in Queens or someplace outside of the city like Far Rockaway or Pellum just to name a few places.

Manhattan is also very noisy. If you don't mind being awoken at 3 am because someone is playing their music in the street loudly than you may not mind it. Thursday though Saturday nights are the worst in terms of noise. Good luck with your move. I am planning to move to NYC soon too.

Unless you plan to have a roommate or two you have to be very, very rich to live in Manhattan, unless you really have to live in Manhattan you should start off in one of the Outer Boroughs, because it's less expensive, and it's well connected to Manhattan (except for Staten Island unless you like ferries).

If you move to the West Village, Soho, and Tribeca, you might move near a celebrity. Plenty of famous folks in those neighborhoods. Who knows you might be next door neighbors with Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. Good luck.

Manhattan in a wonderful place to live. Granted the cost of living is very expenive, you have to remember that NYC is the highest paying city in the country, with the highest minimum wage and a ton of opportunity. There are so many experiences, and places in Manhattan, you will never be bored. People can complain about the traffic, and the noise and pollution..but if its so terrible, and so expensive then why are there millions of people living there."If you can make it there...you can make it anywhere"(-frank sinatra)

NYC is wonderful. I love it there. BUT Manhattan is expensive. Try finding rent in the other boroughs, like Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, or Staten Island. It may be cheaper.

Good luck to you.

If you can handle the 24*7 noise and can afford it, yes.

Just forget what grass and open space is.
I can't remember what the population is off hand, but there are so many people crammed on that little island.

5,000 dollars a month for a place that you would pay 700 dollars per month in any other place. But i guess you pay so much because of all the tenants that will live with you. I mean the cockroaches.

those who absolutely stay in ny are likely very, very knowledgeable and picture of themselves as cosmpolitan and state-of-the-artwork and do not ignore ny is the capital of style, music, leisure, all charm to liberal human beings. and that i disagree about Wall street being Republican. companies on Wall street are giving extra money to Obama than McCain this year.
