Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works on HK's Commitment to the Environment at the Foreign Correspondents` Club of Hong Kong, Dr Sarah Liao proves as a result that “No Plastic Bag Day” reduces the number of plastic bags used greatly; she encourages people to carry out and expand similar events such as afforestation. Dr Sarah Liao points out in an interview that many green environmentalists have been promoting “No Plastic Bag Day” last May. Since then it has been four months and we have had very encouraging responds; saving up to 400,000,000 plastic bags with association of shops and yet haven’t had any situation of complaints. The government is now doing research on expanding this project, including the environment of Afforestation Society, promoting afforestation in living environments also hoping that the District Council will take part in such events besides recycling.

There have been questions from students asking about the legislation of discontinuance of supplying toothpaste, toothbrush and daily toiletries in Hotel rooms in supporting the reduction of waste production. Dr Sarah Liao used the reason of Hong Kong being an economical-free society, suggests that legislation can be difficult.
