Electric Road is a famous road in the eastern district of Honk Kong Island. It locates at the north of King’s Road in North Point. It runs from west to the east to connect Tin Hau and North Point, and joins Java Road by its eastern end.
HISTORY;
In 1904, tram started to provide service in Hong Kong. It ran on Electric Road which had not been named yet. In 1913, the Wan Chai Power Plant of Hong Kong Electric Holdings Ltd., which was situated in Wan Chai, was unable to cope with the provision of electricity on Hong Kong Island, the North Point Power Plant was built on the Fortress Hill in North point as a result. As affected by the First World War, the project was delayed until the summer in 1919. The construction of the power plant brought along development of North Point. In 1929, improvement work had been done in that road which was finally named “ Electric Road”. It had been the busiest road in North Point before King’s Road came into service for traffic.
Anyway, the word ”electric” was gradually replaced by “electricity”. Hong Kong people of the new generation no longer understand the meaning of this word. Therefore, they always write the address wrongly as “Electric Appliances Road”.
