Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character. He is a very cold-hearted, selfish man, who has no love for Christmas, children, or anything that even provokes happiness.

Jacob Marley is a fictional character and was the business partner of Ebenezer Scrooge. Earlier, both men had apprenticed in business and met as clerks (presumably in Accountancy) in another business. The firm of Scrooge and Marley was a nineteeth century financial institution, probably a counting house, as Marley refers to their offices as 'our money-changing hole'. They have become successful bankers, with seats on the London Stock Exchange; they are also stockholders and directors of at least one major association, but a vast amount of their wealth has been accumulated through usurious moneylending.

Cratchit is seen at work, where he copies letters by hand in an underheated "dismal little cell", "a sort of tank", and in his small Camden Town home with his large family on the following Christmas Day and a future one, gatherings which Scrooge visits invisibly with the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Future, respectively. Cratchit is repeatedly described as "little", and clothes himself in a tattered white comforter, not being able to afford a coat.

Tim is crippled and very ill, near to the point of death. Nevertheless, he is a very happy boy and is very much loved by his parents; he is best known for the line, "God bless us, every one!" His illness could be easily cured with the right money; however, Cratchit's low wage from Ebenezer Scrooge does not provide the funds to do so, and Cratchit dares not ask Scrooge for help.

The Ghost of Christmas Past was the first of the three spirits. The Ghost of Christmas Past appeares to Scrooge as a white-robed, androgynous figure of indeterminate age. It had on its head a blazing light, reminiscient of a candle flame. It carried with it a metal cap, made in the shape of a candle extinguisher, with which Scrooge finally banishes it by extinguishing the light on its head.

The Ghost of Christmas Present was the second of the three spirits. The Ghost of Christmas Present appears to Scrooge as a large man with a red beard and fur-lined green robe. He carried a large torch, made to resemble a Cornucopia, and appeared accompanied by a great feast. He was given to outbursts of laughter. He could change his size to fit in any space.

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is being non-speaking did not identify himself by name. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is the last of the three spirits and appeared to Scrooge as a figure entirely muffled in a black hooded robe, except for a single gaunt hand with which it pointed, and it never spoke or made any sort of vocal noise.

Fred is a fictional character in the story. Fred is Scrooge's nephew and only living relative. He is a kind-hearted, cheerful, optimistic man who loves Christmas. He believes that there is good in everyone, even his miserly, misanthropic Uncle Scrooge.
