Hong Kong Heritage Walk
A walk through downtown Central with its mélange of architectural styles is a wonderful opportunity to explore the historical origins and development of Hong Kong from its earliest colonial days to the present.
This guided heritage walk starts at the Central Post Office with an introductory talk on the cultural and historical significance of such landmarks as Statue Square, the nearby Old Supreme Court Building (built in 1911 and now housing the Legislative Council); the old Bank of China Building, and Lord Norman Foster's stunning creation, the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank Main Building, among others.
Then it's on to "Government Hill" (so known because it houses the principal government offices) where you'll discover such architectural gems as the French Mission Building (now the Court of Final Appeal) and St. John's Cathedral (1849), as well as Government House, the home of former British governors and now the current Chief Executive. Across the road are the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, and further westwards the old Victoria Prison and Hollywood Road with its antique shops.
You can rest your feet as you take the Central - Mid-Levels Escalator, the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system, up a few blocks through the fashionable SoHo bar and restaurant district. You'll get off at Caine Road, and walk past the Museum of Medical Sciences and the location where the Bubonic Plague epidemic started in the 1890's. Then it's off to the famous Man Mo Temple before ending at Possession Point, where the British landed and claimed the area for the British Crown in 1841.
