Sharma, then 24, is the son of an influential politician with business interests in sugar mills. The court also found two of Sharma's friends guilty of destroying evidence and helping Sharma escape, CNN-IBN reported.

Sharma, who was out on bail and not present in court, later surrendered and was taken into custody. The Times of India newspaper quoted Sabrina Lall, the victim's sister, as saying before the hearing that she hoped for the best but was also prepared to face the worst.
