During the 2nd World World, a lot of monks and nuns ran away from China and arrived at Hong Kong for shelters. The “Fook Wai Termple” and “ Tung Lam Temple ” in Tsuen Wan accepted some of those monks for living temporarily.

Monks and nuns in Hong Kong were not respected by Hong Kong people because for many years, Hong Kong people has had been the only nation in the World that has so far believed that it was unlucky to see the monks and nuns in the street especially the gamblers.

About 40 years ago in 1960s, a group of young people was leaded by a monk in the Western District and formed the Buddhist Youth Association {BYA} to develop the Buddhist affairs in Hong Kong . The activities were to invite the monks and nuns to guide the people in Buddhism. This has arisen the overall Buddhism in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Buddhist Association is a central association to arrange those buddhist activities in Hong Kong representing the overall Hong Kong Buddhism in respect of the World Buddhist events.
The Hong Kong Buddhist Association was founded in 1945 with the objective of propagating Buddhism and providing charitable social services to the public. It is the largest and leading Buddhist organization in Hong Kong with a total membership of about 10,000 comprising bhiksus, bhiksunis, upasakas and upasikas. The Association is actively engaged in the following services and activities :
1. Propagation of Buddhism
2. Medical Service
3. Education
4. Child Care Service
5. Youth Activities7.
7.Services for the Elderly
8.Charity Welfare
9.Burial Service
10.International affairs
