I had the same problem. It ended up being a dirty laser. I cleaned it with a q tip and worked like a champ.

attempt establishing your case and removing the suggestions cable (the huge ribbon cable) from the CD force and boot up. Then close it down and reattach the suggestions cable and initiate the pc returned. as quickly as booted up seem for the installation new hardware message interior the decrease spectacular. If it does that attempt to apply a CD or DVD. This cable ought to of been loose. solid luck

try reinstalling the software that came with the dvd rw drive, you should also know that some dvd drives only support certain types of media like dvd-r ,dvd+r, dvd+rw, dvd-rw check the manuals to see what media it supports and make sure your using the right media, also if using win xp go to device manager inside of controll panel and look for any errors with the devices

you can also try by clearing the upper and lower filters in registry
click on start>>>Run
Type>>Regedit click OK
in the registry editor window
click on the plus sign next to HKey_Local_Machine then
Click -------do-------------------- System
Click -------do-------------------- Current Control Set
Click -------do-------------------- Control
Click -------do-------------------- Class
Click on this file {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Then on the right side delete upper filter and lower filter. Then restart your comp and check.

I'd go for the real disk cleaner. I've had success getting optical drives working again, and recognizing CDs and DVDs. Fine dust can get in there and cause problems.

check the connections , if its ok , remove the drive and insert another ( borrow it from a frinnd). if his drive works well but not yours , service your cd drive

I suggest you buy a "Cleaner disc" before you try\do anything else.

They're quite cheap, most any store that sells electronics (even Drug stores, etc) sells them.

I think its just your disks. There probably dirty or you have already used them. Try buying new ones.

Does it show any information when you put other disks in? Like music cds? If the cd drive doesnt work completely, than you might need to update the drivers.

You can also try to clean your cd drive laser.

First thing you want to do is check the device driver:

Check Device Drivers

To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl the item to be checked and select Properties.

You should be told whether or not the item is working properly. You can also update the driver from here.

Take comp apart, change DVDRW drive, put comp back together, enjoy burning

it's pretty obvious that it's dead. But, check the cable inside, see if it's loose or something.
