梵谷早期的作品和當時荷蘭繪畫風格一樣，色彩深沉。作品題材多取材於生活之中，藉著陰鬱的色調、滯重的筆法，把人群困苦的生活表達得至為生動。在描繪人物方面，線條深刻，令能觸動觀者情緒。

自梵谷於1886年去了巴黎後，他的繪畫風格從此有很大的轉變。他受到新印象派及日本浮世繪的影響，先用點描畫法，後來轉用強烈而亮麗的色調、跳動的線條、凸起來的色塊來表現其主觀的感受和激動的情緒。

梵谷在法國南部阿爾的生活並不如意，跟好 友鬧翻以及內心種種的孤寂，不但使他的瘋病再次發作，更使他過世前的作品都充塞了濃鬱、暗淡的氣氛。在作品中所充斥的線條狀的筆觸，更表達了畫家不安、絕望的情緒。

The brush stroke in Chinese painting and calligraphy of the lines form flooded in the works, has expressed painter's uneasy , desperate mood even more.
