張寧是位大器晚成的球手，她於1985年時進遼寧錦州市體校，當時的教練是為杜志新。4年後入遼寧省體校，同一年之內成為省隊成員之一，省隊教練是白麗華。其後於1990年入選國家二隊，1年後晉身為一隊成員，教練陳玉娘。

張寧穩定的發揮令她於1994年贏得法國公開賽的女子單打項目冠軍，獲得尤伯杯賽亞軍與哥本哈根精英賽女單季軍。1年後於城市運動會中得到混雙以及女單項目的亞軍與全國錦標賽女單賽事亞軍。

1996年，張寧奪得瑞典公開賽、亞洲杯以及馬來西亞公開賽的女單賽事冠軍，並於尤伯杯賽得到亞軍。兩年後在全英公開賽得女單項目亞軍、馬來西亞公開賽的女單賽冠軍、亞運會女子團體賽金牌、汶萊公開賽女單賽事季軍、丹麥精英賽與大獎賽總決賽的女單賽事冠軍得主。另外，張寧又於1999年獲南韓公開賽的女雙項目亞軍。

2001年，張寧於新加坡公開賽與亞洲錦標賽均贏得了女單賽事的冠軍，又於世錦賽及羽毛球超級賽女單賽得季軍，又於哥本哈根精英賽女單項目得到亞軍。1年之後，張寧於南韓公開賽女單項目贏得冠軍，又在中國、印尼、新加坡公開賽與亞錦賽的女單賽得到亞軍，以及於日本公開賽的女單項目四強出局。

2003年，張寧於瑞士、新加坡、德國與香港公開賽得到女單賽事的冠軍以及在丹麥、全英公開賽女單四強出局，更在伯明罕舉行的世界羽毛球錦標賽女單決賽中擊敗隊友龔叡娜奪得冠軍。1年後，即2004年，張寧於瑞士與全英公開賽的女單項目四強出局，後來於南韓和馬來西亞的公開賽中贏得了冠軍，

2004年，張寧於雅典奧運第13次對荷蘭籍印尼選手張海麗，兩人在前12次交手中各勝6次，最終張寧以2:1擊敗該名死敵，獲得中國於該屆奧運的首面羽毛球金牌。 張寧亦成為首位世錦賽兼奧運會女單雙料冠軍的中國選手。

2005年，張寧分別於德國公開賽、世界羽毛球錦標賽與全英羽毛球公開賽等四次在女單項目不敵隊友謝杏芳，四次獲亞。而在香港公開賽中，張寧奪回冠軍，之後的中國公開賽，張寧戰勝謝杏芳，成功奪標。

In the quarterfinals, Zhang beat Wang Chen of Hong Kong 9-11, 11-6, 11-7 to advance to the semifinals. There, she defeated countrywoman Zhou Mi 11-6, 11-4. Zhang defeated Mia Audina 8-11, 11-6, 11-7 in the final to win the gold medal.

She is also the winner of World Badminton Championships 2003 (Women's Single) at Birmingham. She beat the titleholder and Chinese compatriot Gong Ruina with 11-6, 11-3 in the final. At the 2006 IBF World Championships she reached the final again, this time losing against Xie Xingfang.
