Good-hearted dreamer Larry Daley, despite being perpetually down on his luck, thinks he's destined for something big. Amidst the chaos, the only person Larry can turn to for advice is a wax figure of President Teddy Roosevelt , who helps our hero harness the bedlam, stop a nefarious plot, and save the museum.

Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is a divorced man in his 30’s who has been bouncing around from job to job his entire life. Each of his “brilliant” schemes have failed and forced him to look for work elsewhere. His ex-wife Rebecca (Carla Gugino) is concerned that the inconsistency of Larry’s life is beginning to affect their young son Nick. Desperate for a job, Larry applies at the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan and gets hired to become the lone night guard. To save money, Larry is brought on to replace the three former guards, Cecil (Dick Van Dyke), Gus (Mickey Rooney), and Reginald (Bill Cobbs).


Cecil and the boys give Larry a wrinkled stack of instruction papers and then leave him alone on his first night. Larry quickly falls asleep and awakens to find that everything in the museum comes to life at night because of a curse brought on by an ancient Egyptian tablet. The instructions left by the former guards include important items such as, “Lock up the lions or they will eat you” and that sort of thing. Aided by Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) and a tiny cowboy named Jed (Owen Wilson), Larry has to take charge of the creatures and people from all across history and get them to work together against a few disgruntled old men who are trying to steal the tablet.

When Larry Daley, a divorced father who can't seem to keep a job for more than a week, applies for a job at the Museum of Natural History, he is assigned as a night guard. However, a seemingly easy job turns out to be a wild ride when he finds that an ancient curse has caused the "inhabitants" of the museum to come to life.
