Etihad Airways first launched in 2003 by Abu Dhabi Government as the flag carrier of Abu Dhabi replacing the position of Gulf Air... And during these 3years, they have added 20 new aircraft into their fleet and with 13 more new expected to join the airline...
Etihad Airways was launched as Abu Dhabi Government feel that Gulf Air was loosing market and incompetitive against Emirates/Qatar Airways... The star of Middle-East, and Abu Dhabi Government launched Etihad Airways in order to hopefully become the third star...
Etihad Airways services is very good and many people suggest that their services are at Emirates level or even better... But personal point of view, their services are better and also have better wider seats comparing to Emirates...
To get to AUH, the most direct way to fly could be Emirates/Qatar Airways direct flights to Dubai/Doha then connect onto flights to AUH/Muscat (Oman)... This is because Etihad Airways only operate flights from AUH to Kuala Lumpur/Bangkok/Manila... But Hong Kong is not on their list... And for Muscat, there is no direct link to SE Asia...
And finally, Gulf Air (GF) still do operate to Hong Kong via BKK from Bahrain...

There is no direct flight to Abu Dhabi or Muscat. If you go to Abu Dhabi, you can ride on Emirates and go to Abu Dhabi by taxi. The distance between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is only 160km. Otherwise, you may change the flight in Bahrain or Doha, which I think it is a little bit stupid if you refer wait at the airport.
