Hydrangeas are one of very few plants that accumulate aluminium. Aluminium is released from acidic soils, and in some species, forms complexes in the hydrangea flower giving them their blue colour.

繡球花的部分品種會因土壤中的鋁離子溶解度多寡而影響花色，但不是每個品種都可以。酸性土壤中會增加鋁離子溶解度，使花色為藍色；而鹼性土中鋁離子溶解度低，於是花色為紅色。一般利用土中拌入0.1﹪硫磺粉，或是施用少許明礬水造成土壤為酸性，來得到藍色花也使藍色花更純正。另外也可以利用施肥的方式來維持土壤的酸鹼度，像是肥料中增加鉀肥減少磷肥比例，能使花色轉為藍色。還有一民間古老的做法，就是在土中插入生鏽的鐵釘，也能產生藍色花。不過，常會有轉色不完全的情形發生，造成花色渾濁，不藍也不紅，最常見的是偏紫紅色的花色，表示栽培階段肥培管理不佳所造成。
