13. What is the function of NaOH solution?

A. To supply OH- ions which hydrolyse ester to give soap.

B. To supply Na+ ions which hydrolyse ester to give soap.

C. To supply H2O for hydrolysis.

D. To make the acid stable in the acidic medium.

answer is A

ester undergoes alkaline hydrolysis to give alcohol and salt. If the ester u mention is an oil (i.e. a triester), glycerol (propan-1,2,3-triol) and soap will be formed.

B is not correct because what we need is an alkaline medium but not Na+ ions. KOH can achieve similar results.

C is not correct. ester do not easily hydrolyse in H2O

D is not correct. Alkalis neutralize the acid rather than "stablizing" it.

i'm gordonlai88. Actually what i mean is that hydrolysis needs alkaline medium but not Na+ ions. E.g. u can use KOH to do this, but u cannot use Na2SO4 to do the hydrolysis !!!
