M.Phil is similar to PHD, a research degree that you spend alot of time in thinking of a thesis topic and do research/prove. That's why it's a "philosophy" degree.
Master degree can be a degree for a particular area and can be very practical (by research or coursework). For example, I am currently doing LL.M. (Master of Laws) enabling me to practise as a solicitor/barrister. But LL.M. can be in international law or other areas of law, which may be more theortical.
