Refer to Group II of the Periodic Table and answer the following questions:

1. Both magnesium and calcium react with cold water to give hydrogen gas-magnesium reacts very slowly, while calcium reacts at a moderate rate. Based on this information, predict the rate of reaction of (i) beryllium (ii) barium with water.

The periodic table is organized in such a way that the elements are more reactive as you go down. Also, the most reactive is Group 1, with Group 0 (the inert gases) the most unreactive.

Therefore, beryllium is the on row 2, while barium is way down at the row 6, you can predict that barium would react with water at a faster rate than beryllium.

(should I be doing homework for you?) :)
