為什麼God bless us 的bless 不需加es?

首先要說的是，前一位回答者的答案並不正確。
雖然 God bless us 與 May God bless us 意思相同，但是前者其實並非後者的縮略。

要明白為何 God bless us 不用 blesses ，你要先明白這一句並非普通講述事實的陳述句 (Statement) 。那甚麼是陳述句？舉個例， He has a gun 是說「他有一支槍」這個事實，而講述事實的陳述句就要按照文法在 He 後用第三身動詞。

很明顯， God bless us 並不是陳述句，它的意思並不是說「上帝真的有祝福我們」。你在說這一句時，其實是在表逹一個願望，就是「願上帝祝福我們」。這種表達願望的句子是用了 Subjunctive Mood (假設語氣) 。

假設語氣有幾種，其中一種是用在提出命令、要求或表達願望的句子。這個時候，要求的事情會用原形動詞帶出。例如：

The doctor recommended he give up smoking.
I demanded he return the money.

當中 give 及 return 都是用原形動詞而不是 gives 或 returns 。不過，這是很 正式嚴謹 (Formal) 的用法，現代英語通常會在動詞前加上 should 字，如：

The doctor recommended he should give up smoking.
I demanded he should return the money.

不過，有些自古以來的慣用語還是會用這種 Simple Present Subjunctive ，而 God bless us 就是其中一個例子，其他例子有：

God save the Queen! (不是 God saves the Queen!)
Long live the King! (不是 Long lives the King!)
