Mass media is a term used to denote, as a class, that section of the media specifically conceived and designed to reach a very large audience such as the population of a nation state. It was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines, although mass media was present centuries before the term became common.

傳播媒體或稱「傳媒」、「媒體」或「媒介」，指傳播信息資訊的載體，即信息傳播過程中從傳播者到接受者之間攜帶和傳遞信息的一切形式的物質工具；1943年美國圖書館協會的《戰後公共圖書館的準則》一書中首次使用作為術語，現在已成為各種傳播工具的總稱，如電影、電視、廣播、印刷品(書刊、雜誌、報紙)，而自從電腦的普及化，網上媒體在電腦網路中亦成為一種新形式的傳播媒體。
