Japan & the Japanese culture is well known for their etiquette, rituals, and extreme-politeness, but behind their smile, they are not too different from people in other countries. Personally speaking, I have experienced quite a bit of racism and rude behavior in Japan as a tourist -- especially when you are Asian, and don't speak Japanese. If you go to areas in Tokyo such as Ikebukuro, Shibuya, or Shinjuku. The bigger department stores make sure their employees display their best behavior, but if you go to some of the smaller shops and restaurants, you'll find the same kind of attitudes you may experience, just like some of the worst you'll find in Hong Kong, Australia, or Europe.
According to Japanese friends and colleagues, prejudice towards Hong Kong tourists stem from reasons such as the below:
- new of illegal immigrants, and crime committed by Chinese from the Mainland.
- the belief that foreignors are the reason why crime has been on the rise in Japan.
- chinese tourists speak loudly and are often quite demanding.
While these are just some of the reasons, some of the rude behavior we see are well deserved... Chinese tourists, and also those from Hong Kong, often appear uncivilized when they are travelling in tour groups -- making a mess at stores, shouting across the room, etc...
As to hatred because of past wars, this is hardly the case... most young people don't care about history and heritage nowadays.
