首先， Jail 其實是 Gaol (讀音與 Jail 一樣) 演變出來的。雖然不論英式或美式英語都慣常用 Jail 這個字，但在美國以外的英語國家，官方文件則會用 Goal 這個字。至於 Jail 及 Prison ，兩者在美國以外的英語國家其實是完全沒有分別的。但美國的司法系統則對 Jail 及 Prison 用明確的區分。
Jail 在美國是由地方政府 (如郡) 設立及管理的，通常用於囚禁被判以一年以下刑期的囚犯或一些等待上庭或判刑的人。而 Prison 則是由州或聯邦政府管理，用以囚禁被判以一年或以上刑期的囚犯。
問題裏的句子是有關柬埔寨的新聞，提到兩名被捕疑犯現還押監房看管，未審訊亦未判刑，若這則新聞在美國刊登，應該會用 Jail ，在其他英語國家則 Jail 或 Prison 都可以。
