2 ZnS + 3O2 → 2ZnO + 2SO2 ,

2ZnO + C → 2Zn + CO2

Suppose 48.6 g of zinc oxide are reduced with carbon.
1)what is the mass of zinc obtained?
2)what is the mass of C used for the reduction?

1)what is the mass of zinc obtained?

= 48.6 / (65.4 + 16) x 65.4
= 39.05 g

2)what is the mass of C used for the reduction?

= 12 x 48.6 / (65.4 + 16) / 2
= 3.58 g

1) Mass of Zn in ZnO=[48.6 x 65.4/(65.4+16)]g=39.047g

2) Since carbon is oxidized to form carbon dioxide,
therefore the mole ratio of carbon to oxygen=1 : 2.
Mass of oxygen in ZnO=(48.6 - 39.047)g=9.553g
So, mass of carbon used=(9.553/2)g=4.776g
