You can determine the difference between them by defining which one is better.

American English is the common language that used in USA and Canada while British English are adapted in England and its colonist (for example, Hong Kong).

Both type of English use the same grammatical format but have differences in pronunciation (for example, tomato, ethanol) and minor differences can be found in spelling (for example: color vs. colour)

Instead of determine which one is better; go by where you will use your English. For example, if you are going to work in Hong Kong or London, then of course British English is the better choice. On the other hand, if you are going to use English in United States, it would be better to use American English as it will help you to blend in with the group.
