Explain why the ester methyl methanoate, HCOOCH3, has a much lower boiling temperature than its isomer ethanoic acid, CH3COOH, and why ethanoic acid has a lower temperature than propanoic acid, C2H5COOH.

Ethanoic acid has hydrogen bonds between the acid groups which cannot be found in methyl methanoate. So ethanolic acid has higher boiling point.

Comparing propanoic acid and ethanoic acid, since propanoic acid has higher molecular weight, the van der Waals force (dispersive force) is larger, so propanoic acid has higher boiling point.
