The standard heught of the top bar counter or ledge is 42". This drink ledge is usually 12 - 14" deep. Conventional barstools you find in furniture stores are sized to match this height. ( stool seat height approx. 28" ) If there are no stools in front of the bar ( just standing at it ) you usually have a footrail with a height of approx. 10" to rest your foot on, to prevent back strain while standing. The bar surface behind and under this ( where you stand behind the bar to mix and serve drinks ) is the same ht. as a typical kitchen counter, approx. 36". If you have another counter against your back wall, behind you where you are standing and preparing drinks, this is usually 36" also. If you are installing an undercounter fridge here though, you will build it to accomodate the height of the fridge. Also above this back counter you may want to install glass shelving, mirror, etc to suit your design. Your countertops are usually plastic laminate ( ie: Arborite etc. ) but you can choose marble, granite. ceramic tile, stainless steel, wood, etc. also. The face of the bar can be finished many ways also, in marble, granite, tile, wood, upholstered, painted, wallcovered, laminate, metal laminates, etc.
Just to recap your standard heights;
Typ. table - 30" with typ. chair - 16" seat
Typ. top bar ledge - 42" with typ. bar stool - 28" seat
Typ. back bar ( and kitchen counter ) - 36"
( you can also find kitchen counter height stools with a
seat ht. of 22", but they are not as common )
I hope this info helps.
