What is the difference between 'How do you do?' and 'Nice to meet you'?

If I am attending a formal meeting, which greeting I should use?

Usually only British use "How do you do?" If you use "How do you do?" when greeting Americans, they will understand, but they are not used to it.

At a formal meeting, when it's your first time meeting that person, after someone else introduced your names, you could say either "How do you do?" or "Nice to meet you". And if you and the person you just met have a conversation and one of you has to leave, then you could say, "Nice to meet you" or "It's great meeting (or chatting with) you".

Honestly, just maintain a polite attitude and people will understand that English is not your first language, don't need to be nervous about it's a "formal meeting".
