That depends on whether your college is quarter-based or semester-based. In general, it is expected that you take at least 12 to 15 units per quarter or semester for 2 years. That is, 36 to 45 quarter units or 24 to 30 semester units per school year.
Number of credits varies for different classes. Most semester-based classes are 3 semester units and most quarter-based classes are 4 units. However, some more intensive classes may have more units. An example may be a Physics class with labs.
Because the number of units is directly related to the number of classes you take, of course it will take you a longer time before you can transfer if you decide to be a part time student.
Your major also plays an important role in the number of years you attend community college. Students majoring in Engineering often find it harder to transfer early than those who major in Economics.
If you happen to be an international student, you MUST register as a full time student during the quarter or semester you attend school.
In general, taking 9 units or more will give you full time status.
