Go with the rating, it is quite reliable.

1) Get a feel from pictures of the hostels that within my price range
2) Check whether they have private bathroom (if that's important to you)
3) Then, look into the details - LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!! not too far away from train station, but not too close either.

That will help you to pick the diamond from the rocks!
