Derivatives are a kind of investment vehicle which derives its value from its underlying assets (eg. equities, index futures or commodities) or their changes in price. Futures, forward contracts, options and warrants are all derivatives commonly found on the market.

Derivatives can be used to hedge risks and reflect market movements. There are 3 kinds of market participants of derivatives: hedgers, speculators and arbitrageurs. Hedgers are those who are unwilling to take high risks and intend to protect their own investments in times of a falling market. Speculators use derivatives to take profit by buying in when prices are on the rise and selling off when prices are on the downside. Arbitrageurs make use of derivatives to maintain return on investment without taking any risk by simultaneously buying and selling the same or similar financial instruments at different prices on different markets.
