首先,兩個都是對,相信你都知,只是想知分別。

NEED 這字有兩個用法, 可作為 AUX VERB 及 MAIN VERB,用法有分別,但意思差不多。 do not need (不需要)裏的 need 是 MAIN VERB,而個 DO 便是 AUX VERB。need not do (不需做)的 need 是 AUX VERB,後面跟住的 do 便是 MAIN VERB.

do not need 後面如用 VERB 要加 TO,如用 NOUN 則不用。e.g.

need not 作為 AUX VERB, 後面當然是跟 VERB,不會跟 NOUN。

Need he go so soon? Unlike can and may, however, auxiliary need has no other form like could and might for the past tense: He said we need not worry about that. 1. More at auxiliary and primary verbs, dare, have to, must, and ought. ...

上面也是解釋 NEED 作為 AUX VERB 的用法,如下面字典指出,個 FORM不用跟 SUBJECT,用於現在式,否定和疑問句。上面例子可見用HE,個 NEED 不用第三身加 S。

下面是字典解釋。

v.aux. To be under the necessity of or the obligation to: They need not come.

Usage Note: Depending on the sense, the verb need behaves sometimes like an auxiliary verb (such as can or may) and sometimes like a main verb (such as want or try). When used as a main verb, need agrees with its subject, takes to before the verb following it, and combines with do in questions, negations, and certain other constructions: He needs to go. Does he need to go so soon? He doesn't need to go. When used as an auxiliary verb, need does not agree with its subject, does not take to before the verb following it, and does not combine with do: He needn't go. Need he go so soon? The auxiliary forms of need are used primarily in present-tense questions, negations, and conditional clauses. Unlike can and may, auxiliary need has no form for the past tense like could and might.

Regional Note: When need is used as the main verb, it can be followed by a present participle, as in The car needs washing, or by to be plus a past participle, as in The car needs to be washed. However, in some areas of the United States, especially western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, many speakers omit to be and use just the past participle form, as in The car needs washed. This use of need with past participles is slightly more common in the British Isles, being particularly prevalent in Scotland.

最後,想指出上面有句例句是錯。

>>I need not going to scool today.
need not 後面一定係 gerund (+ing) 錯

need 作為 AUX VERB ,如後面有 NOT,則不可用 PRESENT PARTICIPLE (上面個 GOING 是 PRESENT PART。 不是 GERUND),還要用 BARE INFINITIVE 如 NEED NOT GO,這是英文中著名 BARE INFINITIVE 的用法之一。所以,應改成

I need not go to school today.

need not 後面一定用 BARE INFINITIVE

need 作為 AUX VERB ,如後面 無 NOT, 才可加 ING,如

Things that need doing. ... Things that need doing.

如有疑問,恐怕只能寄信補充,因超字數。

do not need後可以係verb or noun, need not就一定係verb!

I do not need to go to school today.I do not need these series of textbooks as I have already finished the exam.I need not going to scool today.need not 後面一定係 gerund (+ing)
