Did You Know: Soccer's All-Time Top Scorer Isn't Pele
(Monday, October 18, 2004) USSoccerPlayers - Brazilian Artur Friedenreich is soccer’s All-Time top scorer. Even though most people think that it’s Pele, he’s actually second with 1,280 career goals. Friedenreich played from 1909 to 1935 and netted a whopping 1,329 goals! Friedenreich, whose father was German and mother was Brazilian, was soccer’s first black superstar, playing for Brazilian clubs such as Paulistano, Sao Paulo, and Flamengo. He was born in 1892 and nicknamed “The Tiger”. He also became the first Brazilian national team star after winning what is now known as the Copa America. In fact, he led Brazil to a pair of titles in 1919 and 1922, scoring ten goals. The main reason why Friedenreich is not officially listed as the top goalscorer in most lists is because he played is entire career as an amateur.
Pele, on the other hand, played professionally for Santos and, most famously among American fans, the New York Cosmos, where he reportedly was paid $7,000,000 for a three-year contract. Pele played 93 international matches for the Brazilian national team, including four World Cups. He is the only player to ever win three World Cup titles, in 1958, 1962, and 1970. Over his professional career, he scored 1,280 goals in 1,360 games. Even though Pele’s numbers are almost unprecedented, he is also not listed in the International Association of Football Statistics for all-time scorers in first division soccer. The Brazilian league system was not awarded first division status until 1969. Since Pele played for Santos between 1956 -1974, almost 14 years were uncountable for the record books.
Since the American Soccer League was an officially recognized first division in the early 1900s, Scottish-American Archie Stark’s record is official. Stark holds the single-season scoring record for a recognized first division. Playing for Pennsylvania’s Bethlehem Steel of the American Soccer League, he notched 67 goals in 44 league games in the 1924-25 season. With 300 career goals, Stark ranks 43rd on the all-time list of the world’s first division goalscorers.

Arthur Friedenreich (born July 18, 1892 in São Paulo – died September 6, 1969) was a Brazilian football player. Nicknamed The Tiger, he was one of the first black players in the previously white world of Brazilian football, and was arguably the sport's first black superstar. He was of mixed descent; his father Oscar Friedenreich emigrated from Germany to Brazil , and his mother Mathilde was an Afro-Brazilian.

After playing with a succession of São Paulo club sides from 1910 onwards, Friedenreich made his debut with the national team in 1914. He played twenty-two internationals, including wins in the 1919 and 1922 editions of the Copa América, scoring ten goals. On Brazil 's 1925 tour of Europe , he was feted as the King of Football.

He retired while playing for Flamengo in 1934 at the age of 42 and died on September 6, 1969, he was 77 years old. He played over 1200 games, scoring over 1200 goals, which is comparable to the record of Pelé. However, Friedenrich's statistics cannot be confirmed as some of the goals occurred in matches not recognised by FIFA[citation needed]. The statistical records which his father and then team-mate Mario de Andrade compiled disappeared after Friedenreich's death.
