What display card do you have la?
I you use Geforce series (any thing better or equal to 5200)you can can set it up on you driver, if no driver just go to
http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html to download new forceware. There is duo mon set up wizard la. detail see here

If using Ati display card they have Hydra vision in the driver

Best way is to plug in two monitors before you start your computer ar. In start up PC will notice you have 2 monitor then you can use the method the guy mention to set up or better to setup from driver.You must plug in the 2 monitors first.I assume you are using Win2k or Win XP
