One point you should know is that the numeral "1" represents the position of the -OH group (hydroxyl group). The -OH group can be placed at two different positions:

CH3-CH2-CH2-OH

CH3-CH-CH3
   |
  OH

To indicate the exact position of the -OH group, the former one is named as propan-1-ol, while the latter is named propan-2-ol. Geddit?

PS: THERE IS NO METHAN-1-OL, ONLY METHANOL!!

Becaues -1- can state the position of OH , like

propan-1-ol: CH3CH2CH2OH propan-2-ol: CH3CHOHCH3
