Let X=Cindy's last year salary, Y=Katy's last year salary.equation 1: X = Y
[Cindy's & Katy's salaries were the same, last year]
equation 2: 1.08Y-(X-300) = 1100
[1.08Y is Katy's salary for this year, (X-300) is Cindy's salary for this year]
since in equation 1, we know that X = Y, equation 2 will become: 1.08Y-(Y-300) = 1100
which is 1.08Y-Y = 1100-300
0.08Y = 800
Y = 10000
Thus their salaries last year are Cindy $10000 & Katy $10000.
