I have just been to Barcelona over Christmas... And I have booked my hotel through http://en.venere.com/hotels_barcelona/ which price is quite reasonable... And they range from 40 euros up to 100 euros...
Out of which, I have stayed in a hotel called Hotel Coronado which is in the El Poble Sec and within 5minutes walk from Paral-Lel Metro station (end of line L2 near the coast)... It shows as 75 euro per night... And it is within 30minutes walk from Aeroport Bus stop at Placa Espanya (first stop after you left the airport)... It is also within 15minutes walk from the main tourist area in Barcelona... It is also located on the same Metro line as Camp Nou which is L3 and get off at Les Corts...
Hotel Coronado is pretty good... Although their staff are not very good in English, but they are very polite and they will answer any question that you have and suggest place to visit and stuff... And in Barcelona, you will find that many people will understand some if not a lot of English, so that would be OK...
P.S. There is a tourist information at Barcelona Airport which will give you a Barcelona map for free and can also help you to find your hotel (although they are not always right)... And at Hotel Coronado, they will give you a pack which include a Barcelona Map, Metro Map etc as you arrive as well...
If you dont mind serious walk within Barcelona... Majority of the stuff are within walking distance... Personally, I would suggest you to take 1 day to visit the artistic buildings around Barcelona which I would suggest you to start with the Catedral which is near the heart of tourist area, then you can visit Font De Canaletes... Afterwards, follow the road (Passeig de Gracia) to Casa Mila, and on the way you will see another artistic building call Casa Lleo Morera... Afterwards, turn right at Casa Mila for Sagrada Familia then back towards the beaches which could take you more or less a whole day... And maybe another morning, you can travel on L3 Metro to Vallcarca to Parc Guell (which is like a park but with loads of artistic stuff)...
Eating in Barcelona is not too expensive (if you dont eat in the tourist area)... In my experience, majority of the place would cost you are 5~10 euro and around 15~20 euro in tourist area... I would highly recommend you to have a taste of Spanish Omelette and dry meat which both taste pretty good... And for some reason, they have bread to go along with everything... And in most places, they usually have menu with pictures so getting things shouldnt be a problem even in tourist area (but maybe the first day or two should be in the tourist area... So you can have a rough idea of what food you can expect...)... Personally, I have found that there is nothing much different between tourist area and non-tourist area, the food are the same but just higher price in tourist area...
Also, some resturants will have seats outdoor... And it is better to seat outdoor as they allow smoke inside... And for outdoor, their air happen to be much better even on the side of the road (as they have less high raise building)... So eating outdoor isnt really a problem and in fact quite good with the kind of weather that Barcelona have...
