Surfactants in shampoos is the chemical to help to wash away the dirt and oil on hair. Sebum (skin lipid) stick on the surface of the hair to collect dirt. Surfactants strip the sebum from the hair shafts, and remove the dirt attached to it.

Reconstructors are added into the hair conditioners, usually containing hydrolyzed protein. Their role is to penetrate the hair and strengthen its structure through polymer crosslinking. Also, Lubricants and Oils are also added to help dry/porous hair become more soft and pliable.
