Because it's the first time the chinese retaliated against western imperialism. After that followed the century of independence and revolution.

Its a turning point because China was tired of foreing policy in trade, and stuff like that and they wanted to do it their way without any suggestions. Foreign countries were just meddling in their affairs literally. I'm talking aspects such as political and what not. To the chinese due to their govt. today though you can say its a modernization. they broke away from impearilism to wht they are today.
