hi it's me again. This is based on my own experience...

Of course you can be extremely careful if you 屈蛇, like you have to walk in one after one like in the matter of 10-15 minutes to make people look like you are not travelling as a group, but in some cases, the hotel people are the entrance are kind of like "dog watchers" so they remember you. I stayed in 2 hotels before in ikebukuro and the second one has that condition of "dog watcher" so you have to pass through that lady before you get the the elevator. for the first hotel, since the lobby is on the 2nd floor you can by pass them, but they will keep an eye on the elevator monitor, right?

Other people has mentioned about being careful in the room as the house keeping will be the first to report to the managers if they noticed the room has more then 1 or 2 luggages than the usual amount, so that you have to be careful too.

But someone told me about the consequences of being discovered. In some cases, you might have to end up with the police as the Japanese are pretty serious about it. You don't want to ruin your time in Japan and end up with the police right?

I had a similar situation last time I went to Japan with my mom. I almost got a single room and do the 屈蛇 method but I was warned by a lot of people.

There are 2 methods I would suggest:
1. contact them that you have a large group and see if they offer group discount and explain you are just a student etc...
2. can you consider youth hostel or YMCA? Maybe the facilities arent as great as standard hotel but if you are just planning to have a place just to sleep, I think that will be great affordable choice lei~

One important fact about hotels in Japan - they are very strict when it comes to charging you for extra guests in a room. In many cases, they will add the charge to your final bill without notifying you. So if you plan to sneak add'l people into your room that's booked only for 2 guests, you'll need to make sure you do it carefully -- usually it's the cleaning lady who would report this sort of thing to the hotel management.

Shouldn't be a problem but remember, keep it low profile. I have same experience, we have four persons sharing one room.

One tips for you, always keep the room tidy before you leave for sightseeing, because if you give too many works to the housekeeper, she will report to the hotel manager.
