Nominal GDP is the day-to-day GDP you often see, which is reported without adjusment for inflation rate of an economy.

Real GDP is the nominal GDP after adjusted for the impact of inflation.
Their relationship is: real GDP + inflation = nominal GDP, or
r + i = m

Most often inflation rate i will be +ve ; if the inflation rate is -ve, we say that there is a "deflation" instead of negative inflation, which is rare but happened in Hong Kong in previous recent years.

To answer your question, nominal GDP > real GDP if there is an inflation;
while during a deflation, real GDP will be > nominal GDP.

3rd paragraph should read: Most often inflation rate i will be positive; if the inflation rate is negative, we say that there is a DEFLATION, instead of negative inflation.
