Caught in the Middle

She stared at the body of her son, wondering if tears would come. No, she decided---not until she had justice.

"Look at this, Manuel," the farmer said to her eldest. "These bruises. Military technique!"

Manuel bent. The wind had blown dust over his brother's body, and it was difficult to see the bruises the farmer pointed to. After close examination, he said, "I'm not sure. The Rebels---they've been copying the Military's style... trying to implicate the government." He pulled off his cap and shook his head. "I just don't know."

A sob threatened, and she spoke to hide it, "A boy... A farm boy. He never took sides."

They'd come close to a fight. I knew the deal, I'd been there in my day, and I could see it in their eyes. I decided to talk to one, but waited until it was safe---until the smoke cleared---before waiving one of them over.

I grinned at his description of me---a mere thirty year old, but probably twice his age.

"What was that all about?" I asked.

"He been dissin' me. Starin' me down."

"Staring you down?"

"Yeah. S'how he messes with ya."

"By just looking at you?"

"C'mon. You that ol'?" he shook his head and laughed. "Guess you don't understand."

"I did once," I told him. "A long time ago. But I think you're right. I don't understand anymore."
