駱駝是駱駝科駱駝屬的動物，只有兩種，鼻孔能開閉，足有肉墊厚皮，適合在沙漠中行走，背有肉峰，內蓄脂肪，胃有三室，第一胃室有20-30個水脬，可以貯水，所以耐饑渴，可以多日不吃不喝，一旦遇到水草，可以大量飲水貯存。所以被稱為「沙漠之舟」。生活在沙漠邊緣的人類早在公元前3000年已經開始馴養駱駝，作為役畜，以供馱運和騎乘，有許多國家有倚賴駱駝為生的駱駝牧民，甚至有駱駝騎兵。

單峰駱駝毛短，主要生活在北非洲和西亞洲、印度等熱帶地域，生活在沙漠地帶的牧民以駱駝奶甚至駱駝血作為食物，目前全世界只有1400萬頭，全部是家畜。19世紀末澳洲曾從非洲引進部分單峰駱駝，後來由於不再應用役畜，只向中東出口，大約有3200頭散落到澳洲沙漠重新野化。

雙峰駱駝毛長，耐寒，春季脫毛，主要生活在中亞和中國西北、蒙古。大約只有120萬頭，20世紀在塔克拉瑪干沙漠發現野駱駝，可能是雙峰駱駝的祖先，大約有1000頭，中國政府已將這一帶劃為野駱駝自然保護區。

因為駱駝作為役用畜的作用隨着機械化的進程而減弱，所以數量越來越少，已經快要成為需要受保護的動物。
駱駝主要分布在亞洲跟非洲。在亞洲的通常是雙峰駱駝，所以我們常稱雙峰駱駝為亞洲駱駝；單峰駱駝則是叫做阿拉伯駱駝。要分辨駱駝除了看駝峰之外，單峰駱駝的腳比較長、身體比較輕，所以可以走的比較遠。

雙峰駱駝的腳雖然比單峰駱駝粗，走得比較慢，但是牠卻可以背比較重的東西，而且可以適應比較寒冷的氣候。

體長300～330公分，身高195～200公分。雙峰駱駝比單峰駱駝更有力，可搭載250公斤的東西，以4公里的時速，可日行40公里。
