一般而言，當胎兒在三週至十三週時，母親的身體會自然地保護胎兒，對身邊的週圍環境和進食的食物特別敏感，因為此時的胎兒比較脆弱，身體各部份在生長，而在這時期間，任何有害物質也會對他們的成長有影響，固有「害喜」之象，即「作嘔」。
