Upon heating , a mixture of iron and sulphur gives a black substance.

what is the black substance??

Iron(II) sulphide is the product given out by iron and sulphur upon heating.

word equation: iron + sulphur ---> iron(II) sulphide
chemical equation: 3Fe + 2S ---> Fe3S2

Iron+ sulphur -------------> Iron(II) shulphide

Therefore, the substance is Iron(II) sulphide

Chemical equation: 8Fe(s)+S8(s) -----------------> 8FeS(s)

*Note that sulphur appears as a crystal formed by 8 sulphur atoms naturally though it also appears in a form of crystal formed by 7 suphur atoms, which is quite rare in the case.
