core 2 duo and amd

If your budget is under HKD$5,000, AMD is better.
If you never overclock, AMD is better.(If overclock, it must be C2D)
If you wanna buy E6300 as your CPU, I would say AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 is better.
For the reasons why the config with A64 X2 4200 is better than E6300:
To buy a good mainboard for Conroe, it needs more than HKD$1,000.
To but a good mainboard for AMD, it needs about HKD$700
The price for AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 is HKD$1,280
The price for Intel C2D E6300 is HKD$1,472
But the performance of E6300 leadA64 X2 4200 not much, just around 5%.
That means, it is difficult for you to feel it.
When you compare the price, you can see the difference.
AMD can help you save more than HKD$500 which you can upgrade you Display card for one level.
For the reasons why under HKD$5,000, AMD is better.
If you use C2D, that means you need to buy a cheaper mainboard.
But when you use AMD, you need not use a cheaper mainboard as you got that HKD$500.
If you are not using C2D, it is the world of AMD, as the Intel Pentium and Pentium D are much hotter, energy consuming, lower performance than the same-priced AMD CPU.
