In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week.

In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head.

During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of "volleyball" was played.

In 1900, a special ball was designed for the sport.

In 1916, in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) were introduced.

In 1917, the game was changed from 21 to 15 points.

In 1920, three hits per side and back row attack rules were instituted.

In 1934, the approval and recognition of national volleyball referees.

排球歷史

排球的發明與籃球有很多相似的地方。籃球發明於一八九一年;排球發明於一八九五年。籃球發明的地點為美國東部麻省;排球亦然。籃球發明人是隸屬美國青年會春田學院的教員;排球發明人則是麻省霍爾約克市青年會的體育部長。
發明的經過是霍約克市青年會的體育部長毛根氏,感覺到籃球運動的發明,短短幾年即普遍介紹於國內外。乃以網球的原理,利用球的內胎,把草地網球網升高懸掛。以手代替球拍而將球胎往來拍擊過網,並命名這種球戲為Minonette。此時因籃球與美式手球正在倡行之際,故此種球戲只在麻省春田市及新英格蘭區域流行。這時春田學院的哈士特德博士正式建議此種球戲為排球。還簡單的制定些遊戲的方法。其建議為排球的原因,乃是這種球戲的發球,與網球運動中拍擊Volley 動作相同的緣故。
最早的排球運動,對球場大小、球網高低都無一致規定,即以球員人數而論,也分為五人、六人、八人、九人、十二人、十六人等多種。
一九二二年冬天匹次堡青年會中心舉行第一屆全國 Y.M.C.A.排球錦標賽,同時排球運動也自室內推廣至室外了。再經過青年會的傳教士,及第一、第二次世界大戰,美國軍人挾排球轉戰各地,排球遂自美國傳播於世界各地。
